ABOUT MUSIC LESSONS at HGS

Welcome to the Haliburton Guitar Studio (HGS), where we offer a diverse range of lessons in various styles of stringed instrument music including folk, jazz, rock, traditional, bluegrass, and classical.

Lessons are taught by Nicholas Russell, who brings passion and expertise to each session. Residing in the scenic Haliburton Highlands with his family, Nick has cultivated a deep appreciation for music and its power to connect people.

At Haliburton Guitar Studio, we believe that learning should be both enjoyable and enriching. Each lesson is designed to be relaxed and informative, allowing students of all ages to engage with the material at their own pace. You will have the opportunity to learn songs that resonate with you while honing essential techniques like strumming, finger picking, developing chord vocabulary, and exploring innovative ways to voice chords and more.

Musicianship is a cornerstone of Nick’s teaching philosophy. In a typical lesson you will cover skills such as critical listening, ear training to improve pitch recognition, and the fundamentals of rhythm. Students will also learn to read music notation and can explore composition, empowering them to create their own original pieces.

For those interested in formal music education, we offer the option to enter into conservatory training with either Conservatory Canada or the Royal Conservatory. This path provides a structured framework for developing your skills and achieving recognized certifications.

Nick has had the privilege of teaching a diverse array of students, from dedicated young learners to adult hobbyists and emerging professionals in college music programs. Each lesson is tailored to meet individual goals and interests, ensuring a personalized learning experience.

  • Welcome to Haliburton Guitar Studio! We’re excited to work with you. Here’s a quick overview of our payment policy to keep everything smooth and straightforward.

    PAYMENT INFORMATION

    Monthly Billing: All lessons are billed monthly, and e-invoices are sent through email on the first business day of the month.

    Lesson Rates: Private lessons are $30/half hour, and we typically schedule them weekly for either half-hour or full-hour sessions. You can enjoy your lessons in person at our cozy studio in downtown Haliburton or from the comfort of your home via Zoom or FaceTime.

    No Registration Fee: We believe in making it easy for new students, so there’s no registration fee. We do ask for a commitment of at least one month to ensure you get the most out of your learning experience.

    Payment Methods: We accept a variety of payment options for your convenience: Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, e-transfer, cheque, and cash. If you choose to pay by cheque, please make it out to Haliburton Guitar Studio. You can also find a payment option in our studio store.

    CANCELLATION POLICY

    We understand that life happens! If you need to cancel a scheduled lesson, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance. In this case, we’ll happily credit your lesson to the following month.

    Please note that lessons canceled without 24 hours’ notice won’t be eligible for a refund or reschedule.

    MY MUSIC STAFF

    At The Haliburton Guitar Studio, we strive to provide a seamless experience for our students and their families. To enhance our services, we utilize My Music Staff, an online platform that simplifies scheduling, communication, and billing. Upon registration, all students and their guardians receive a login to our online lesson portal at www.haliburtonguitarstudio.ca/student-login. Here, you can easily access billing information, view your lesson schedule, and explore additional lesson materials. We’re committed to making your learning journey as smooth and enriching as possible!

    TIPS ON HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF THE BEST START

    CHOOSING AN INSTRUMENT

    Selecting your first or next instrument is an exciting journey, but there are several important factors to consider:

    The type of guitar you choose—whether it’s a steel-string, nylon-string, or electric guitar—will significantly influence the sounds it produces and the way you hold it while playing. Each type of guitar has its unique tonal qualities and playing techniques, so it’s beneficial to try out a few different styles to see which resonates with you the most. Pay attention to what feels comfortable and inspiring, and consider the musical genres that motivate you—whether it’s contemporary, classical, folk, or another style. Aligning your instrument choice with your musical vision can enhance your playing experience.

    Another crucial aspect is the guitar’s body size and scale length. Ensure that the instrument feels appropriate for your body size; a comfortable fit is essential for effective playing and enjoyment. An instrument that feels good in your hands will make a significant difference in your learning journey.

    Not all new instruments are created equal. It’s wise to invest in a guitar with a solid reputation within your budget. Some affordable favorites include Canadian-made brands like Art & Lutherie and Simon & Patrick, as well as the Taylor Academy Series and GS Mini. A quality instrument will stay in tune more easily, be more comfortable to play, and retain its value, making it a worthwhile investment should you decide to upgrade in the future.

    For beginners, having a steel string guitar set up with fairly low action—specifically 5/64ths of an inch on the treble side and 6/64ths of an inch on the bass side (measured at the 12th fret)—is essential for an easeful playing experience. This setup minimizes the effort required to press down the strings, making it more enjoyable for new players. At Haliburton Guitar Studio, Nick provides professional setup services, drawing on his background in guitar making to ensure your instrument is optimized for comfort and playability.

    PRACTICE

    The time you dedicate to practice can vary based on your daily schedule; however, consistent daily practice is highly beneficial. Even short, focused sessions can lead to significant improvements over time.

    Establishing a structured routine can help maximize your practice effectiveness. Consider starting with scales or rudiments to warm up and gradually transitioning to repertoire—songs you’ve learned. This balanced approach allows you to engage with different aspects of your musical development.

    Remember, it’s normal to experience frustration during your learning process. If things don’t sound perfect right away, don’t be discouraged. Persistence is key; with time and practice, you’ll find that playing becomes more natural, enjoyable, and fulfilling.

There are hundreds of method books available, suitable for musicians of all levels.
